Beats by Dr. Dre
get Beats Studio/Pro if you're into the marketing hype and want to be cool like the other million kids who bought them over xmas. In the 300 category, there are many cans better than the Beats. Don't even think about solo, they're pure junk.
I had Sennheiser HD595 but after while, I was searching for more lower end frequencies and Senn's open air cans don't typically have good bass unless you're getting into the HD600/650s (and even then, many say they don't have the bass they're looking for). Many believe Sennheisers only start to sound good starting at HD600 and above, with better lows, mids, highs, less veil, and better soundstage. Also, if you recable the HD600/650, they'll be a lot better as well. Also, these cans need to be run through a DAC/AMP to be fully enjoyed. Remember, HD515,555,558,595,598,600,650,800 are all open cans so people will be able to hear you when you're listening to music. They're recommended for home use only. Get closed cans if you want to listen to them at work.
I'm waiting or my entry lvl Denon AHD2000 to arrive and I'm hoping it'll fit my needs better. I'm just starting to get into the audio stuff. I previously ran my HD595 through a NuForce uDac2 HP DAC/AMP. Not very expensive but gives a better over all sound quality compared to on-board computer sound outs.
Once you know the type of music you regularly listens to, you can then pick out a pair of cans that'll fit your needs. Or, you can get multiple cans for different sounds.

I'll give you a hint, they're overpriced marketing hype. I'm not saying they're inherently bad, I'm just saying they're not gonna be any better than 100$ pair of Sennheiser HD555's. Do your wallet a favor and do some research.
Or just buy them because they have Dre's name, whatever floats your boat. Just know you're throwing a lot of money away.

Anyone use the Shure headphones? I know for a fact that they are a big name in the microphone industry, so I assume that their headphones would be as good as their microphones...
I'm considering the SRH440's mostly
Frankly, styling is a big factor when it comes to headphones for me. I would wear them at work, **where other people see me**... haha
The shures are around $100... not too bad if you ask me.
I'm also leaning towards the headphones with more emphasis on bass, which is why I was interested in the beats at first.

Ignore the fact that if you're paying $300 for cans and not plugging them into a discrete headphone circuit/amp/DAC/combo, then you're just jerking off.

Any recommendation for a headphone amp that's less than $100? Thanks!

NuForce Icon Mobile. Slave it up to your computer- the difference is not subtle.

I hoped this product would improve the output of my iPod mini into PXC 450 Sennheiser, which is designed as an ambient noise reducer phone. The Senn's are sweet sounding even sans battery, useful as just regular phones to mate with iPods. Recommend Sennheiser over competing Bose as more musical, with less midrange pre-emphasis. In the combo of NuForce + ipod mini + Sennheiser, even experimenting with the slap-on device that bypasses the ipod volume control, the ipod alone sounds better - louder overall, better deep bass - without the NuForce than with it. Sorry, guys. My Sennheiser IE8's are better yet, with less need for external help.. pity.

Thanks! But slave it to my computer? What does that mean? I want to hook it up to my MP3 player (Zune HD) and HD595 (and Beats). Again, thanks.

There again, if I had the 495s as my main headphone, I'd look at a real headphone amp in the chain (like Headroom, Grado, ASL) or would at least bump up to the uDAC.
I have the DrDre Tours, they are not the ones you want (or might have already bought it by now). But I got to tell you that first i got the fake ones on ebay and thought they are legit. NO THEY ARE NOT.
Get it from best buy or Apple store, but if i was to buy the Studios, I would definately buy the Bose Noise Cancelling ones instead. They are twice as better, you dont hear NO noise and the sound is just magical unlike the Studios.
