Bit rate on MP3's
I guess the answer to that question would be similar to the more common, "what car should I buy?" question. Take a test drive and decide for yourself. 
Try encoding the same song at different bit rates and see if you can hear the difference. I think WestSideBilly has already posted above that a lot of it also depends on the hardware you are using.

192 k works for me on modern recordings.
For oldies from the 50s, etc., I use 128 k and get more songs per disk without any noticeable loss in quality.
I never use low rates like 64 k, where sound suffers, even on oldies.
I always use the stereo setting, and ignore whether songs are in mono or not.
