I wonder what their reaction would be if they're forced to learn a second language fluently.
Like proper English?

My wife is from Honolulu and I always tease her about the thick accent and pidgeon english spoken in Hawaii. I sat in an L&L waiting for some food on Kauai and could not understand a word of what two guys were saying to each other. Its as bad or worse than most inner city mainland slang.

Think I am wrong? Watch a few episodes of "Dog the Bounty Hunter" and see how often they have to caption the locals who are supposedly speaking english.

I agree with having to learn to speak English if you live here, but please... now the requirement should be to speak as if you were born in Cape Cod?

Oh - I'm sorry, that would give you an New England accent. How about Dallas? No - wrong again, now you have a southern accent. Chicago? Nope - accent there too...

Seems to me most people posting here are only happy talking with people who speak EXACTLY as they do. How boring.

I feel bad for the East Indian guys who come over here with extensive indication and the best with can associate them with is "What gas pump # please?"
"education"?

also, Indians around here in the Bay Area associated with high tech and medicine, not gas pumps.

Yes, it bothers her most likely.

I've been studying Mandarin for over 4 years now. My chinese is probably marginal worse than her english, and it's only that 'good' because she learned street english and I learned diplomatic Mandarin from one of the best chinese programs offered in the U.S. in a college university.

It's still very frustrating looking basic things up in the dictionary.
