Default cable modem

hey guys i have a at&t cable modem and want to connect another computer to it also.. so i can go online and my sis can go online too at the same time.

well my question is what kind of stuff do i need to buy in order to connect two compouters to one cable modem?

dont mention a router i tried and it doesnt work. i dont know why? do you need to contact at&t to make the router work saying you have another computer connected?

there is another thing i heard that all you need to buy is that thing with a cable modem line and connect it then both will work with no hassle. i dont know what that thing is called do you guys know what im talking about?

any help wouold be appreacited..

Try this site

http://www.dslreports.com/pictures

There are dozens of other websites out there that describe how to do this in painstaking detail, so I'd suggest that you do a little searching/browsing and I'm sure your problem will be solved. Alternately ask some of your friends who know what they're doing.

I wouldn't tell your provider that you are going to attach 2 computers to one modem. They will charge you the business rate because you'll have more than one computer pulling bandwidth from them! Like CBeyond says, ask some friends. My friensd were instrumental in helping me out, and at one time, there were as many as 4 computers on my DSL modem!

Simple solution:
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.as...rid=23&prid=405

This can be purchased anywhere for about $129-$149 bucks.

It technically allows for upto 255 connections behind 1 connection, but has 4 ports build in (you can use the other 251 connections by adding a hub, but that sounds like overkill for you).

Its pretty much plug any play... just set the computer to use "DHCP" (thats actually the computers default for a cable modem, so no changes for you)... and set your default gateway to the IP of the box (usually 192.168.1.1)

Anyway, that one piece of equipment will take care of all your needs, plus its a "firewall" which will prevent those prying eyes.

I use one, and love it.

the setup i have is a linksys router, and two computers...

you call att and tell them the serial number off the router and thats it. they don't care that it is a router, i told them and they said ok. if they ask, tell them it is for security measures only. you want a firewall.

the router was 99 with rebate and coupon off at amazon.

The Linksys product that amartin referred to is the one I bought. It works great and was very easy to setup.

I've installed a few Linksys routers and they all work - you shouldn't need to call AT&T because they have something built in called "MAC Cloning".

Every network interface has a distinct MAC address. When the AT&T tech set up your cable modem, they registered the MAC address of your network card with their network. With the Linksys, you can enter the MAC address of your computer's network card into the router and viola, you're all set without having to call AT&T.

If you are Windows 2000, you can find the MAC address by bringing up a command window (aka a DOS prompt): Start, Run, type "cmd", press enter

In the command window, type "ipconfig /all". Your MAC address will be listed under "physical address". It's in the format XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX where the XX are hexdecimal numbers.

emrillive -

Check out Fry's Electronics this weekend. They have the Linksys wireless cable modem router for $99. This is the one I'm currently using and it works great. Good luck!
