Default Computer guys, a little help please...

So I've got Charter broad band, as does just about everyone around here. Anyway, we've got 2 computers, but only one hooked up to the Net. Anyway, a friend of ours that lives about 100 miles away (who has Charter as well) brought her laptop in the other day, and out of nowhere she connected to the Net. Of course she has a wireless card, but I don't have a wireless modem. Obviously someone close to me has a wireless connection.

Here's my question; Is it possible to simply purchase a wireless adapter for our second computer and merely "feed" off of our neighbors connection? Now, I'm not asking if it's moral or not, just if it's possible.

To my brain, the reason our friend was able to connect is that she has the Charter program on her computer, and the neighbor probably does as well, but I really don't know.

So, can we use the neighbors connection or not?

Also, how would this be illegal? If the speed itself is in the air, not any kind of information, how could it be illegal to feed off of that? It's in the air, right?

Just askin' guys, don't crucify me, this wasn't our intent, but hey, if it works, go with it, knowhatimean?

If she was able to without hacking through the firewall then you should be able to as well. When you set up your wireless connection there are certain security levels which you should set up but you dont have to and this would allow you to receive their signal.

Just be sure to set your own security settings though otherwise someone may get into your pc. Do you have a firewall?

Why dont you just use your own connection? Are you concerned that you are going to exceed your quota? If that's the case and you burn out your neighbours quota then that'd be a bit harsh.

she can leech of neighsbor's connection if they dont set up connection setting with their router and stuff.

you can buy a wireless modemn for yourself. they are not that much. they're cheap actually. networking gear today are dropping in prices like mad

Yeah, I know, it's pretty weak, using someone else's signal, but free at the end of the day is still free. I didn't realize there were things like quota's, I don't want to make their connection any worse, although I can't really see how that'd happen. I've been trying to get her connected with it, but it just ain't happenin'.

Basically, the 2-computer icon in the bottom bar will go between saying it's connected with a really weak signal, or not connected at all, but it hasn't seen the Net yet. I thought I'd have to configure her connection or something, but her friend just walked in and was like..."I didn't know you had a wireless connection", and we were like, "uh, we don't". She was just automatically on the Net, it was weird.
