Unlike the US and Canada, in Asia and Europe, people don't get to choose their own license plate. The #s and letters are picked randomly. Thus you have people who trade license plates. Say your name was Pete Wilson, well you could do a search and buy a license plate with a PW... In HK, single digit license plates like 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 will sell for US$50K or more. HK1, HK2, HK1288 etc. US$5K...
Wow - so in the U.S. you get to choose your own plate for free when you get a new car ?
Isn't there some kind of market for old plates - if I were in the U.S. and willing to sell W6 DAN to someone, could I auction it ?
