I just sold a car to somebody about 2 weeks ago and kept my plate. Went to the DMV 2 days ago to register the new car and just had them use my old plate. The only thing the DMV lady suggested was that you dont put the old plate on the new car until its officially registered just so cops dont get confused if they pull you over in the interim

I didn't know you could do that. I recently bought a used car w/ cash and went straight to the DMV. I was handed a plate on the spot; I didn't know you could do that either.

The woman at the DMV, the guy I bought the car from, and the guy I sold the other car to all said to bring my old plate to the DMV. LA state OMV site says just destroy it.

Yeah you can do that, it happens all the time when someone transfers their vanity plates.

She offered me a new plate so I just asked if I can keep my old one since I already have it memorized. Seemed to be no issue.

This is in AZ, I cannot speak for other states
