Once I opened my garage and the neighbor's car ran out. Damn thing had been in my garage all night. When I took the Lambo out of the garage, sure enough, paw prints on my front window.
I haven't seen that cat around lately.

The trick is to lock it where it doesn't want to be, overnight. It'll never want to get stuck again.
Don't hurt the animals. Yeah it sucks that there are cats loose, but at the end of the day that's the fault of the owners, not the cat.
Go to the humane society or your nearest pet shelter and explain, and ask if you can borrow a humane trap. They'll almost always just lend it to you for free. Leave the trap out, trap the cats, and take them to the shelter.
The owners will have to go to the shelter and pay a bunch of money to get the cat back -- assuming nobody else adopts their cat first. Repeat as necessary, but the one time I had to do this, the neighbors smartened up in a hurry.

Depending on where you live, you can legally trap cats that come onto your property. You have to do it humanely of course and take the cat to the animal shelter immediately. The city I live in even has traps available to rent for free
