People need food and shelter all year round. It sickened me when the shelters I worked at would overflow with toy donations at Christmas. Ummmmm do you get these people don't have a home and half of them don't even celebrate Christmas?! I get the intent, but...

I enjoy donating time or food/money to people year-round. Sometimes the mood will strike me on a random day and I'll go do something nice and I feel better about myself as well. Guess that makes it selfish

To be honest, for most of the donations I make I do not want a receipt for tax purposes. If I want to make a donation then I accept the cost to me and don't need to be credited in some other way for it.

This is so true.
People think about it more during the holidays, but then after the holidays there's a big drop off and things are crappy again. It'd be better to donate on the non holidays becasue so many people donate during this time.

. I think people just want to feel better about themselves to be honest with you.

I agree with one of the posters who commented that often people donate to make themselves feel better. I think it's safe to say that most people who own an S can afford to have a turkey dinner if they want it this season, while some people don't know how/when they will get their next meal...Who doesn't want their guilt assuaged? If people benefit from donations, regardless of the doner's motivation, that's a positive.
