this seems like a dump question, but which one is better for gaming and general purpose?

GeForce FX 5200 128MB or GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64MB

I'm no expert on video cards, but everything I've heard indicates that the GeForce 4 Ti 4200 is superior for games, and probably general use as well.

Main - and possibly only - advantage the GeForce FX 5200 has is DirectX 9 support.

i am pretty happy with it, no complain

since i don't spend as much time on games nowadays, i am not looking to upgrade any time soon.

However, we can already give you some of our first impressions about the performance of the new cards. In the standard tests without FSAA and anitotropic filtering, the FX 5600 Ultra seems to be just about the same or slower than a GeForce4 Ti4200 8x and Radeon 9500 PRO. This might be due to the reduced pixel pipelines (2x2, as opposed to 4x2). With 4xFSAA, it appears to reach nearly double the performance of the 4200, beating a 4800 as well, but it loses out to the Radeon 9500 PRO. It's a similar picture with the anisotropic filtering. In the pixel shader tests from 3DMark 2001, it beats the 4200/2800, but loses in the vertex shader tests. In both tests, it clearly loses to the Radeon 9500 PRO.

The FX 5200 Ultra is quite a bit slower than the 5600 Ultra in the standard tests. In anti-aliasing, it's just a tad behind the Ti 4200. It's the same with anisotropic filtering - at least in Balanced mode. In Performance mode, it even manages to beat the 4800.

 

In other words:

The 4200TI is proabably better.

The FX 5200 will look "pretier" as it has AA and other features, but it doesn't really have the Horsepower to push these effects for todays games (HL2, DOOMIII, ect..).

So unless you want to spend some money on a decent DX9 card (the lowest suggested off of www.pricewatch.com: $152 - RADEON 9600 XT 128MB ), then you are better off sticking with a 4200, or a 4400 Geforce card.

 

fx 5900 $180 and it outdoes the Radeon 9800 in 90% of tests. Two of the guys at work have them and they test in the graphics tests we run way better than any other card tested. (All of the above.) Do a Yahoo search. You will get lots of info on the tests ran.

 

The Radeon 9800 XT is the best, fastest card available for tomorrow's new age of gaming. If you guys don't know, Dallas is the centralized place for Computer gaming, Internationally. ( http://www.thecpl.com ) Games like Doom3 and HL2 will run seemlessly on this card. The FX 5400 is out now (yes, it's brand spakin' new) and shows moderate gains over it's predecessor.

My vote, and the vote of all professional gamers ... ATI Radeon 9800 XT.

if you have 200 to spend go to newegg.com n get an ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb. that thing will last you 3 years from now. n is the best bang for the buck at 200 price.

Man, he's talking about GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64MB and you guys are pointing him to the 9800xt (I actually do have that card )? I'm sure if he's looking at older Geforce 4200s, he's not going to want to spend a car payment on the latest Radeon.
