` am redoing my whole kitchen and my bathrooms and well the construction person i am using plans on using $8-$10 square feet granite. i am not in construction so i have no idea but does this sound like cheapo granite to you? also take in consideration this is wholesale price not consumer price.
i am doing my whole kitchen with resuface my cabinets and redoing a stain and 2 bathrooms and 1 master bathroom. Everything is gutted and replaced. from the light fixtures to towel racks, and the floor with granite. he is quoting me $50k.
In Arizona - Wholesale cost on most tier 1 thru 3 granit is $8-$12 /sqft. Tier 4 can run up to $20 and their are some exotics that can run in the $40 / sqft range That is just for the slab and does not include any cutting, polishing, etc.. The fabrication and installation typically runs around $25-$30 / sqft. - more again for the exotics since they are more difficult to fabricate (hard to cut/polish, easy to break in transport/install).
I just recently remodeled my bathroom. The previous home owner had converted the shower stall into a walk in shower. This resulted in them removing a large portion of the counter space and leaving a very small bathroom counter along with the garden tub in place (which is never used).
I removed the tub, replaced the cabinets, installed granite tops with under mount sinks and new faucets, etc.. Here are a couple pics: (will have to find the before pics)

I purchased the granite from a public wholesale place. It is sold as prefinished countertop sections that are 108"x26" (they have a finished bull nose on one edge and one side). I cut the pieces I needed for the two countertops, cut and polished the holes for the undermount sinks and used a coring bit to cut a hole for the faucets. The normal price for the pre-fab countertop section was $400 (about $20 / sqft), since I have a reseller license to purchase wholesale I was able to get the contractor discount of 40% - resulting price was $240.
I removed the tub from the area where the cabinets are in the second picture along with the existing 36" cabinet, relocated the drain and plumbing, installed the cabinets, re-tiled the section of the wall and floor that was previously covered by the tub and installed the countertops, sinks and plumbing. I had two quotes for having the work done and they were $4800 and $5500. My total cost was $1300 in materials and about 30 hours of my time.
Back on the subject of granite (I have done quite a bit of it) - it is not terribly difficult but you need to be patient, purchase the proper tools ($300 should get you started), and plan on it being hard work and somewhat messy.
In the current economic state you should be able to get Tier 1-3 granite installed for no more than $30-40 / sqft. - there are a ton of guys needing work and a number of the granite wholesale places have gone belly-up.
Next project is to remodel the guest bathroom - already have the cabinets and countertops sitting in the garage.
