Getting a highly compressed video that orginated from a HD feed does not make it HD. I don't wear glasses, so I can always tell the difference. I must be a perfectionist then

Maybe if you are watching on a small TV or monitor, it doesn't matter, but since I don't, it matters.

if you're completely obsessed with getting full uncompressed HD, then you really only watch bluray movies... right?

Netflix HD looks damn good to me, and every HD torrent I've seen has looked pretty exceptional too. If you're really a perfectionist though,
Can you REALLY tell? Everyone will say "yes" but I'd be interesting in seeing the data that proves there is actually a difference worth noticing.

Kinda when you install a CAI. You MAY... MAY get 1-2whp. Physically, you will never feel that difference. But you can "tell" it's faster because you spent the money, it sounds louder, and FEELS FASTER. But, this isn't something worth arguing. Vu feels like his $150-200/month is justified, that's his decision. I don't think it is... there again, I can't afford that anyways. Maybe if I could, I'd feel justified too.

I'm paying half of the figure you are quoting for my HD/DVR setup.

You live close, feel free to come over and see for yourself. I can stream Netflix HD over my Xbox or PS3.

If you need "data". Look at the size of your torrent or how much data your Internet connection if streaming to see the raw data numbers aren't even close. The easiest place to see the compression is during dark/black scenes. Nothing like watching a "dark" movie with a pixelated background.

^ I understand where you're coming from, but the quality difference isn't worth, to me, the $75+ I'm now saving by dropping everything except basic cable. I'd be happy with the SD torrents if that's all was available

I add a new 1.5 or 2TB drive every now and again to my server and I use an application called Media Center Master that automatically checks the internet tv and movie databases for the air dates and availability of tv shows and movies, then searches for and uses UTorrent to download all new episodes. When we go to our HTPC, Media Browser lists all the most recent shows and movies that have been automatically added. It's perfect for us!

By all means, if it works for you, then that's cool. I'm just saying there is a difference.
