i absolutely love sushi and sashimi. a friend of mine owns and runs a quaint place down on the lower east side of manhattan (crazy sushi, 11th down from venerios for anyone local). this place has the most amazing spicy tuna in all the 5 boroughs

the day you can take uni (sea urchin) without a quail egg nor sake and without making a "omg wtf was that" face, then you will be considered the sushi master!

i'm not a master of my sushi domain, but i will occasionally order a roll or two of uni with a slobbering of quail egg.. but i must be kinda buzzed, and there must be some more sake heating up in the back

so the next time youre at your local sushi joint, order some uni, but dont forget the egg and the sake, and tell us how it was!

cheers!

if you haven't tried sushi, then i can honestly say you're missing out. it may look disgusting and some of it is, but in general sushi is delicious. you just gotta get over the fact that you are eating something raw but once you actually try it i think you will come to like it.

california rolls: crab meat (often imitation) with avocado and cucumber. definatley a beginner's roll

unagi: cooked BBQ eel. MY FAVORITE

salmon and tuna are also good.

Some stuff to try at a sushi bar (for experts):

Aji (Spanish Mackerel) <- must try if you like Saba
Ankimo (Monk fish liver) <- very good!
Amaebi (sweet shrimp) <- good w/ fried heads!
Saba

For beginners:
(cooked):
Tamago
Unagi
Ebi
California Roll
Tako

(uncooked):
Hamachi
Albacore
Maguro
Rainbow Roll
Ika
Ika Somen <- squid cut into thin strips, just like somen noodles. Awesome!

I'm not a huge fan of california rolls because I think they are too bland, but I love spicy tuna rolls because they are full of flavor. Are there any other rolls out there for a quasi-beginner that have a lot of taste? I would not be put off by trying squid or something of the like.

speaking of sea urchins,
some time koreans just eat it right there when they catch it.
i saw my father eating it when my family took a trip to
far south korean beach when i was little,
some lady was selling it on the streets right next to the beach.
she takes out one from her bucket, cuts it in half, hands my father a spoon, he scooped ther inside up and ate it.
yuck, yuck, yuck.
