Whey protein isn't really a "get bigger by drinking it and doing nothing else" type of product. It's more of a "performance enhancer" in the loosest terms possible. Atletes/lifters take it to help build up mass quicker than usual since it's a boost in the amount of protein one would normally ingest.
If you're determined to take whey I definitely recommend lifting + minimal cardio along with it.

It does not really "do" anything. It is just a way of getting lots of protien without ingesting lots of fat.
Steaks have protien but can have lots of fat, same with peanuts etc.
Whey protien is fine, but if I was to go the high protien route, I would just eat egg whites. Couple veggies and some hot sauce and you can make a high protien omlette that almost tastes acceptable. It will also make you feel more full than powdered protien.

It's helpful, but take the recommended dosage (usually 2 scoops) and cut it in half. Your body can only ingest so much protein at one time and you'll end up pissing out most of that second scoop.
If you're trying to gain weight, put the whey and milk in a blender with a banana and a scoop of ice cream.

One of my favorite products is NOXplode....I think that's the name. Nitric Oxide and Creatine mixture. Some people don't like things like that, but I can tell you after a day or two of taking it you can feel the extra energy and stamina in your workout.

Agreed on the half dosage part.

below are just my opinions...
Scot - Whey protein works for a couple reasons, it has all the essential amino acids if it's a good product and I believe is 100% bioavailable protein to the body (i.e. if you take in 20g, your body can use a full 20g).... some foods lack essential amino acids and therefor bioavailability goes down, I think the only 100% bioavailable food are Eggs... Chicken if I remember is somewhere around 80%... most fish is high as well. Taking Fish oil or Flaxseed oil is a good supplement to enhance the amount of protein the body can use to build muscle... but don't expect noticeable gains.
How much protein your body can absorb at a time has been in debate for ever... some say as low as 20g per hour... but I find that hard to believe. I try to keep my main meals between 30-40g and snack on 10-15g at a time throughout the day.
Nothing beats a clean diet of real food... protein powders are simply a great addition for convenience to get the protein you need.. if you lift rigorously, most will suggest you try to achieve 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight.... a couple shakes a day can make this much easier. You may also want to research taking a shake with meals that have high GI indexes as well to keep insulin from spiking if you're concerned about weight/fat loss...
Also note Whey protein absorbs fast, it's great pre or post workout... casein for example has a much slower rate... good before bed.
Remember, gaining muscle is a puzzle and when missing one piece gains will be severely limited... hard work, lots of good sleep and eat a ton, don't be a carb weenie, you needs carbs too, stick to them in the first 2/3 of the day, eat something like cottage cheese before bed.
I'm also a big fan of No-Xplode... Doctor has scared me about possible liver side effects, but it sure is a product that keeps you motivated to push hard.. I also like ZMA (zinc magnesium aspertate)... helps aid in deep sleep and supposedly aids in raising natural testosterone production.
Another product I like is New-Whey protein capsules... it's 3 oz of liquid (not grainy, just like a thin syrup).. 42g protein, 6g carbs and something like 170 calories... convenient, no mixing, unbreakable container you can throw around, doesn't need refrigeration... it's a good supplement to a lite meal... problem is they're pretty spendy, about $2.50 each bought in bulk.
