[QUOTE=VoIPA,Jan 27 2005, 02:40 PM] The US was one of the answers (wtf?), but I can't believe they left off Belgium.

FYI VoIPA...the Blackened Voodoo is a pretty average lager but decent. About 5% if I recall. I'd opt for a Red Stripe.

Excellent recommendation regarding the Hoegaarden. I tend to pass it up in favor of the Affligem I mentioned, seeing as though it doesn't meet my 6% pre-requisite, but would be an ideal replacement for the Blue Moon. IMO the Celis White is another great substitute and superior as well to the Blue Moon.

WTF is right. The people they polled must think Coors is good beer instead of swill.

Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:

Trappistes Rochefort 6, 8, 10(the 10 might be my favorite...right now at least)
Schneider Weisse Aventinus, Aventinus Eisbock, and Organic Edel-Weisse(anything by this brewery is excellent IMO)
Westmalle Tripel
Chimay Grand Reserve(Blue)
Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock
Duvel
Westvleteren 12(probably the hardest beer to find in the US because it's technically illegal, according to those hard working monks, to consume anywhere other than the brewery in Belgium but there are ways around that of course)

Affligem Blonde(really good basic ale that i find myself buying often...perfect with almost any kind of food)

Here's a few American beers that I'll consider drinking if all other's above are unavailable:

Allagash Tripel, Four
Dogfish Head 90-minute IPA, Raison D' Etre
North Coast Brewing Company's Pranqster(Belgian Golden), Old Rasputin Stout

Funny you bring up Unibroue, makers of the Fin du Monde, because I had one myself for the first time the other night at the request of a friend of mine. Not bad but IMO no one gets a tripel, or anything bottom fermented for that matter, done like the Belgians. There's just something about European ingredients.
All excellent brews you can't buy here.

I just finished off a pack of Leffe Blond I got from Chicago. How does the Affligem Blonde compare?

BTW, Tripel is actually a top fermented ale, as opposed to a bottom fermenting lager. In fact, I have about 7 gallons of a Strong Golden fermenting with Trappist Ale yeast in my guest bath right now. Smells great in there!

You're right. I meant bottle fermentation not bottom. Thanks for clearing that up.

I haven't tried the Leffe Blond yet but it's on my short list.

If you want some of the beer mentioned above I could get it for you....just not the Westvleteren 12.

Would love to give your Golden a try...I can only imagine how marvelous that aroma is. Good luck with it.

Are you going to be at the Southeastern Supermeet? I'll be sure to save you a bit if so. Or I could bottle and ship you some when it's done if you like.

Ideally, it should be aged a year or more, but I doubt it will last that long.

I've been wanting to try the Chimay Grand Reserve... all I've had is their White. I may take you up on your offer.

The offer is open anytime...just let me know.

Ironically enough I have 6 big bottles of Reserve in my fridge now. Was at the grocery store yesterday and they had mismarked them to $6.99 instead of the normal 8.99-9.99 depending where you go. With a $3 discount per bottle I couldn't stop the wallet from opening by itself. I've tried the White and Red and, while both excellent brews, I couldn't go back after sampling the Blue. I may be heading downtown this evening to a pub that is supposed to have some Chimay Gold on hand which I believe is aged Blue but I've never seen or had it yet. I'll let you know how that goes.

I'm not sure about the Supermeet yet. I've been considering it and will more than likely attend if I can plan a trip out to Atlanta around the same time.
