I'm left handed, (don't know if that makes a difference) and have always wanted to get a handgun. What would be a good first gun?

One thing I like about this pistol is the trigger pull. I hate pistols with heavy trigger pulls. I've fired a few S&W semi-autos with terrible triggers and I could barely hit the broad side of a barn with them at the range. This pistol, when cocked and ready to go, has about a half inch of slack in the trigger that is as light as a feather. Pull lightly until it stops. Pull a bit more and it fires. When I bought this gun, the store I got it from had various pistols you could "test drive" at their range. I tried out about a half dozen semi-auto 9mm's and out of Glock, S&W, Sig, Walther, and I think a Taurus, I liked this one the best (and the price was right ~ $320).
Here's a few pics of Springfield's XD.

Yeah, and then every Walmart will be getting held up by people (who shouldnt have guns) stealing ammo.
Gun laws don't prevent people who shouldn't have a gun from getting one. If they want one bad enough, they'll get one illegally. They just make life difficult for people who are 'sane' and responsible who want one for sport or home defense.

Then there is George C. Scott's idea -- only let women have guns.
On second thought, don't they have enough power already?
My favorite (not practical for personal defense, but a lot of fun to shoot) -- Desert Eagle .440 Cor-Bon.

you sure the seals us sigs? I thought they used HK's?
my experience with sigs: good trigger action but rust easier than a HK or glock. if you dont clean sigs the shell casing tend to start ejecting up vertically which could hit you in the face sometimes..
