handgun permits are pretty hard to come by in NYC, I understand, not imposible, but tough. Frankly, I'm not sure about long guns.

To start, I'd go to a local gun range that has rental guns, and experiment with a variety of pistols to see what fits your hand best, and that you like. For a brand new shooter, it's tough to go wrong with a Glock or XD. I also strongly recommend that you take training from a reputable trainer. If he/she wants you to learn how to shoot "Weaver style", I wouldn't waste your time there. Weaver was great 30 years ago, and a tremendous improvement over shooting one handed, but competition and real life have proven out that Weaver is a bit behind the curve.

Anyway, it's just like driving/racing your car. Spend your money on training and not gadgets and you'll be much better off in the long run.

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

I bought an XD when they first came out. A bit over $300. Great deal.. Now they are alot more expensive. Only thing I wish the XD had was a manual safety like the 1911's / HKs

Catfish, how do you like the HK USPs?

Oh, Black Talons... nice. What are MagSafe and Safety Slugs? Home Defense type ammo?

ideugene, I know you're from NYC, but here's a site on gun info for NJ (just to show you how communist NJ is, much like California). I'm originally from NJ (born and raised for 25 years) and although I love it up there, it's another one of those states where you'll get killed by some loser breaking into your house with an illegally aquired firearm while you wait 3 months for the state to decide whether or not you should be allowed to express your rights as an American citizen to bear arms (thats about how long it takes to apply for a pistol permit). Luckily, I had second residence in FL and bought my pistol down there. Walked in, one phone call to the ATF and 3 days later I was allowed to pick up my new pistol.

Sweet! That'll keep you busy for a bit.

The Black Talons are awesome stoppers for pistol rounds, very nice. Watch out for the Glasers - they tend to be so frangible that there are reports of them impacting and then disintegrating on bad guy's leather coats or heavy layered clothing. That's pretty old news, though, and if the Glasers you bought are new manufacture, I believe they've addressed the under penetration issues...

Have you ever had the chance to shoot a 33 round mag through a G18?? Now that's pretty damn fun!!

I personally prefer the 1911 platform - my main carry/competition pistol is based on the STI frame (a widebody, polymer .45) and to most folks, would look just like a standard 1911.
