NEVER admit guilt. In fact, don't even answer their questions directly.

If you're a Californian, you need to know about this (heck, find out what works for you in your respective areas too):

I would normally agree with the great 8D, but I got pulled over on the freeway the other night on the way to watch the Perseid meteor shower, and after talking with the cop for a few minutes answering and asking the usual questions, he comes back from doing his check on me and says "I don't like being lied to, so I'm going to ask you one more time, how fast were you going, by the way, I'm sheriff, not CHP". I figure at this point, he just wanted to check me out since I was doing 85 mph at 2:30 AM and wasn't really interested in giving me a ticket, so I confused and said I was doing 75 mph . He asked me what my license plate meant, and sent me on my way.

I usually turn up the music relly loud so we both have to yell over it. My first question to the officer is uaually something along the lines of "Good night for partying, eh sir?" If I'm lucky I will have pulled over in an area with lots of other people and they can start rocking out too. We will all party until teh song ends and then get on with our lives. The cop will of had so much fun he will forget about the ticket

You too? I thought I was the only one who did that.

I tried that just after I got the new S and the cop looked at me and said "Sir, your stereo blows chunks" and then wrote me a ticket.

It's not my fault you're running around at 2:30am starting trouble.

Always roll down all of your windows. If you leave it cracked open, cops will tend to believe you may be hiding something (like the odor of alcohol or marijuana). Plus, you will be amazed at the difference of visibility of closed vs opened windows regardless if thew windows are tinted in certain lighting conditions. As to admitting guilt, well that is a toss up. Personally, if someone admits guilt, I usually cut them a warning (if theier behavior does not pose a danger to the public). You can say something like, "I am sorry officer, was a going fast? I apologize, I am pretty tired."
A driver leaving the window cracked may be suspicious to an officer, but does not lend itself to probable cause.

Of course, I'm never hiding anything and don't feel like having a gun pulled on me, so I always make the interior of my car and my hands very visible and warn the officer if I ever have to reach for something (I keep my insurance in the secret compartment.)

Last time I got pulled over it frazzled me a little, and I was a visibly nervous when the officer walked up. I had to fumble for some registration information out of a briefcase making me nervousness. The officer mentioned it and asked for permission to have his dog search my car. I conceded but he never searched. I was actually looking forward to having my car sniffed. lol

Of course its not probable cause!!! But by leaving all the windows open it will put the officer more at ease. Basically, the subtext is "look I have nothing to hide".

Tell him that you were speeding because your wife ran off with a cop and you were afraid he was bringing her back.

I'm not saying it works or will work for everyone but I agree with the origional post. I have admitted guilt to the obvious offense everytime and have only received 1 ticket out of the 14 times I've been pulled over. One time, when I had my 1.8t Gti, I even got into a turbo conversation with one cop who started telling me how he raced and beat a z06 at a light in his sti haha My friends all got a kick out of that one!

BTW the one ticket I got was for going 11mph over the speed limit in a speed trap that had 3 cops with lasers on the downside of a hill
