If they came out with saying it was a design fault, they would have to recall all of the exploders. For awhile there, they were saying how safe it was.
I believe that we will see this ordeal again in another year or so. After the new tires get a few miles on them, they will start to fail again.

Firestone was an American company that was purchased by a Japanese company, Bridgestone.
Firestone brand tires are generally manufactured in the USA, and Bridgestone brand tires sold in the USA (until recently) were generally manufactured in Japan.
