nearly the entire day is spent in my cube, on the computer or on the phone. occassionally the meetings will be face to face.
some people think my job rocks, because i'm being paid to sit and surf and solve (or create) some problems. i hate my job because i like to be busy, feel like i'm more than an ant, and i'm stuck in front of a computer monitor all day.

I was an engineer in a plant environment for 4 years out of college. IT SUCKED. I was on call, worked till we got things fixed. Meetings to talk about having a meeting to schedule a meeting for the meeting next week. Could not get anything done. Switched jobs and I am now a customer application engineer for a software development company that uses 3D modeling to build plants, boats, ships, whatever.
My day to day include,
Get to work
Check email
Start my copy/paste large data reuse
While that is going play on the net
Go to lunch
Have a meeting or two
Go home
The copy and paste runs in the background (since I have a 64 bit machine with 6 gigs of ram) I can play on the net while it runs.
Basically from my rant you can be an engineer in a plant and get worked to the bone with no help (I worked 60-80 hrs/wk) or you can get a design/development job were you work 40 hrs. Depends on the field and the company. I have a BS in chemical engineering with a specilization in biochemical and biomedical engineering.

designer at an ad agency,
got a two year degree, even though I was 1 year away from a 4 year B.A. in business management..I just loved art and needed to find a way to make money, and do what I loved to do.
Job is great and very rewarding at times, at other times its just a crank-it-out kind of thing. It depends on the clients.
I work at a small agency, no time clock, no rules really..very unstructured, just as long as the work gets done.
cool part is that I have also designed paint schemes for Nascars, am working on some now, but cannot really reveal who until the deals are complete. Have meet drivers, traveled to North Carolina, Texas, recently designed somthing for Sammy Hagar. Also design for Barak Obama
My job is really all about what you put in, if you put alot of youself into it you will get alot out...and having an eye for good design...its REALLY hard to force yourself to be creative every day, so Im constantly searching for inspiration.
as far as pay goes its not bad at all. I have a nice Loft Downtown on the river.
I would HIGHLY recommend becoming a web designer, or programmer if your more mathmatically geared.
