it's a long shot, but hey......
rehab isn't an option, $$$$
I plan on helping the person through it, but don't have 24 hours a day to be with them.
my understanding is that methadone isn't a good substitute....

for what it's worth, I also read up about it here:

so it sounds like I'll be stuck in a room with them for a week?

I don't know how accurately the movie "Trainspotting" depicts heroine and relinquishing the habit, but it's still a badass movie. If the withdrawals are anywhere near as bad as the ones Ewan McGregor had in the movie, then have fun with that; he'll need your help any way it goes.
my 02.
if you are going to do it at home, either you have to take some time off of work, or recruit some good friends (of the addicted person) to help. it is important to know how deep he/she is. at some point, it is dangerous to attempt without professional medical help. important to know how committed they are to the idea as well....
getting them off the stuff is a shit show, really. best advice i have is to get he/she far away from where they are right now after detox. [secure job in rural NM and a one way ticket there....forest service should still be hiring trail crew workers] its a lot easier to stay clean if they are many miles away from known dealers and fellow users. heroin is good in this respect, since a lot of the country is pretty dry...
best of luck

I don't envy your position. Your friend is about to face one of the hardest challenges life can throw at you.
What do you think of the person? Are they generally psychologically strong?
The reason I ask is because psychologically weak people, more often than not, cannot shake it and end up dying of an overdose eventually. That may sound harsh, but what I mean is, be prepared for it not to work the first time. If you really care about this person, you may have to go through this with them multiple times in your lives.
Even if he can cut it with your help and escape the immediate physical addiction, the psychological addiction will remain strong for possibly years, he will need close monitoring, and just ONE dose, will put him right back to square one.
I wish you the best of luck.

Wow, you're in a tough and potentially dangerous position. A few friends of my youth went through some nasty meth issues after high school. One is clean, out, and living a normal and productive life. The other is doing 10 years on their 3rd strike.
I commend you on the effort. Keep in mind that there are some serious medical issues to watch for during detox and that addicts have violently attack the people they love to get a fix.
