Few ideas:

FIRST AND FOREMOST you have to monitor everything your friend ingests in terms of pills or supplements.

DO NOT go near methadone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have some Benadryl handy let him take one or two if he has a hard time falling asleep.

If you can run to GNC or something, you can try getting him L-tryosine supplements as that may help to equalize his dopamine levels as I am sure they are completely exhausted.

Have lots of ibuprofen.

Definitely have people with him and try to get him to eat healthy lots and lots of protein and lots of water.

In your spare time, sit on Erowid.org and get some ideas from people who have gone through this. Some resources:

Just based on Slash's autobiography. . . uhhh, holy crap, good luck, and yeah. . . as CU is getting at - the cravings are from dopamine levels (hence why it's a very REAL addiction. . .).

That said, just sit tight. It's gonna be a nasty week or two. . . and that's just from the physical addiction. . .

Alcoholism is actually one of the worst addictions. What often happens is the addict will sink into delirium tremens and intense seizures. The next step is death. More people die from alcohol addiction than heroin or meth.

1. Your friend is going to want to kick or it's not going to happen.
that's a big issue I'm having. they say they want to stop, but I don't know how much I can believe.... as much of a dick that I can be, I'm also compassionate to the people in my life.... and as much as I want to trust them, this is probably gonna be the tipping point....

how good of a friend are they? you are in for some trials and tribulations....
this is something that's stashed in the back of my mind....

they're a good friend, but if they don't want to commit, I'm not gonna twist an arm or anything.... this is probably just my conscience trying to wipe my hands clean of the situation, because I'm starting to already foresee the outcome.....

It's all in his mind man it's possible to go cold turkey but as others were saying it depends on how he is psychologically. NA might be your best bet, just don't let him buy more!!

And try the L-tyrosine supplements they're like 10 bucks for a bunch.
