Well, you can PLAY without a memory card, but it'll never save your progress (winning cars and cash, getting licenses, unlocking stuff in arcade mode, etc.), so not much fun.
You need a PlayStation memory card (not a PS2 memory card). PS2 memory cards only work with PS2 games, and vice versa.
Hope that helps,
Ted

No problem.
Yup, the PS1 cards work on the PS2 for saving PS1 games.
I was kinda disappointed that they didn't figure out a way to let you save PS1 games to PS2 cards, but overall they did a great job of backwards compatibility. I would have been really ticked off if you couldn't use the PS1 card at all, though (I've got 100 cars in my GT2 garage!)
Have fun!

David,
I got it from Amazon.com
I had to buy a bundle for $499.
I started watching the boards at http://boards.ign.com/board.asp?brd=5023 and found ways there to find PS2's
There is a site ps2bargains.com that has a Bot to find them and also tells you who has them now.
It was a little bit of effort and hitting reload on the browser but I got one .
