Default HELP! I'm getting fat

I'm constantly putting on a few extra pounds and I don't know how. I want to stop it before it becomes a problem and I end up with a pot belly.

Up until the summer of 2005 I weighed about 180 pounds. During the summer of 2005 I lived away from home with another family in a big city. I started eating differently and my weight dropped to the 165-170 pound range. Than in fall 2005 I started going to college, and moved into the dorm. I was able to maintain my 165-170 pound weight by running a couple of miles every night. Then in the beginning of 2006 I got busier and I stopped running every night. I started gaining back all the weight. Now, a year after I stopped running I weigh 185 pounds, and it's still going up. People are starting to notice. BTW, I'm 6'2", so it's not that big of a deal.

I do not eat meat, but there is plenty of soy meat available and I eat a fair bit of that. For breakfast I usually eat oatmeal and 2 slices of toast with peanut butter. I usually have lunch in the cafeteria and I'll usually have a burger or sandwich (meatless, so I doubt it's very unhealthy). Supper is probably the unhealthiest meal since I usually eat pizza, nachos or another sandwich. I don't drink any soda, but about 50% of the time I will have something sweet after a meal, like a Honey bun.

Basically I'd like to go back to my 170 lb weight. Once it warms up a little I'd like to start running again. Is there anything else I can do to loose 15 pounds?

Start doing weight workouts and running again. The weights will increase your muscle mass, this will increase your base metabolic rate, meaning you can eat more and just stay the same weight. The running or whatever cardio you do will continue to keep the weight off and keep you in shape.

I tend to eat more than most, but I am slowly cutting back. I lift three days a week and do cardio (run or cycle) about 4-5 days a week depending on the season. My weight is lowering as I up my running mileage and go on much longer rides. I used to lift a lot, but the gym got boring...

I agree with ENTHRALLED. I am 6'0" and I wiegh 180. I want to get back up to 190 like I was, More Muscle mass. I looked great at 190, 180 is alright but I would prefer 190.

If you turned what you think is fat into muscle, you will be rockin. Then people notice that more than anything.

Good luck, Stay away from the sweets, if you eat anything at all, get a bag of almond m&m's and only eat 5 when you get the sweet craving. Then stop.

I'm not very muscular so at 185 I'm starting to show some fat, but at 170 I was just right. I didn't look skinny at all.

From what I read I'm guessing your eating alot of breads like in the pizza, burgers, sandwhiches. Try avoiding white foods like flour, sugar, white rice etc. If you have a sweet craving grab some fruit. I'm a big guy and changing my diet along with excersize has helped me quite a bit. Being a mexican doesnt help though since the fridge is packed with tortillas lol.

My advice would be to drink a lot of water. It is a great remedy to flush out your system. Also, drink some sort of protein shake. I used to drink whey protein with milk and a banana mixed in a blender, and it filled me up! If you stay away from carbs and calories, then you can lose weight without working out. Working out just moves the process along a lot quicker. I can't really talk about my weight. I am 5'7 170lbs and eat Panera Bread or Baha Fresh 5 days a week! You are inspiring me to get back on my diet and to the gym! Thanks !!!

There are numerious things you can do to lose the gut. Some have already been mentioned.

10 glasses of water per day
eat six times a day
build muscle, cardio will not do it alone
protein shake not the ones filled with sugar but the real protein shakes like elite protein shakes.
stay away from crazy fats:hydrogenated or corn syurp
Hire a personal trainer
working out for 90 minutes a day will help a great deal but spending all day in the gym is stupid with capitals

Less is more!

I certain practice what I preach and it works for me.

all the advice above are making your situation more complicated than it needs to be. the main and only reason why you are gaining weight is because, due to your being more busy, you have stopped your running which was burning X amount of calories a day for you. assuming you do not care to build muscles, you have 1 of 2 choices to remedy your problem. 1) find a way to fit running into your schedule again so that you are burning X amount of calories more a day like before, or 2) reduce your daily calories intake. this does not have to be drastic. basically, you can make the portions of each of your current meals smaller. for instance, eat 1 slice of toast instead of 2 for breakfast. for lunch, eat 2/3 - 3/4 of the burger/sandwich and throw the rest away. do the same for dinner, and eat 2/3 - 3/4 of the portion size you normally eat. the bottom line is that reducing portion size will reduce your daily calorie intake without having to commit to a drastic diet change, which is what makes it difficult for most people to lose weight. also, you can do a combination of 1 and 2 and find the balance that it takes for you to achieve and maintain your desired weight.
