Default Help in NY - Sports Store

Hope someone can help me. I have an Oz friend working temporarily in NY at the moment and he is looking for some where in the city to buy sporting gear. In particular he is interested in bikes, climbing & canyoning. He is staying in central NY and doesn't get much time off or have independant transport so a long trip to a shop is out.

When I visited some time ago there was a big store that appeared to have everything but unfoirtunately my memory of how I got there on foot from Central Station is very hazy.

Thanks in advance.

I believe one of the best sporting goods store in NYC is Paragon (www.paragonsports.com). The store is located on 18th & B'way. Prices tend to be on the higher-end but they do offer selection.

The store at the foot of Grand Central Terminal is Modell's. They stock more main-stream type apparel (sp) and sporting goods (baseball, basketball, american football, etc), not climbing and mountaineering.

Lastly, if your friend has any free-time, Campmor in New Jersey would really be his best choice for the activities mentioned (www.campmor.com). It is only about 15 miles outside of the city.

I drive into the city on a regular basis. If he wanted to come out to Campmor, I could take him out by car (after work) and then drop him off at a bus stop for him to get back into the city. You can give him my e-mail (FULL_TIME_90@YAHOO.COM).

Rugby pretty muched summed it up. If not those stores try EMS. They are located off of Broadway on 62nd or 63rd. There are also some Sports Authority stores in Manhattan.
