JRM explained it perfectly. GPs have been going downhill since the greats left... Doohan was pretty much unstoppable because of his skill and the factory backing while he was riding (hence his streak of world championships and the diminish of privateers).
I'm looking forward to the 4-stroke entries into GP, it'll definitely make it interesting to watch again. As for the move to 4-strokes, you must be thinking of motocross, that's the only enviromental move from 2wheel 2-strokes to 4-strokes that I can think of.
As for Nascar, YOU KNOW IT BABY!!!! (he says while holding a vomit bag).... seriously WSBK is so much more entertaining... 2 heats per raceday, LARGE field, more than 6 different manufacturers, inline 4's vs. twins, need I say more?
