Next try out a lower end dealership to see if you would even like it.
I agree with this. Some high end dealerships want to see if you have previous dealership employment before they hire you (depending on the position your looking for). I started out as an office helper in a Chevy dealer body shop, with some skill and a little luck I was able to land a job as a body shop service advisor at a Mercedes dealer. I worked at the chevy dealer for about a year and a half just to learn the basics then went out hunting for a new job until I found this one. Now just to let you know, just because it's a high end car dealer doesn't mean they're going to pay to a huge amount of money...actually I had a job offer somewhere else (another Chevy body shop) for more money than I'm making now at Mercedes, but I stayed because it looks better on a resume and I have a better chance of making some good connections with customers here (lots of $$ rolls through here).

My advise is if you want a job at a dealership then just go and apply to a whole bunch. It doesn't matter what brand you get hired with because you can always move up from there, the most important thing is your getting experience.

man there is a shit load of typos in this thread

Anyway, you can try getting a job as a used car sales man first. It may be alot slower than a bigger dealership, but you get the experience and you still work around cars.

Thank you for the reply's !!!!!

I was thinking more like Manual labor (washing, driving, etc....) as apposed to sales. Although if I were going to do sales I'd really try and learn about the product, It's always funny when you know more about the car than the car saleman.

But I'm not looking to make this a career (unless I find out I love it), just a part time job for right now.

And Yes my driving record is good and my past work history is Great (been working since I was 15), But never really worked around cars. I figure I like cars, so why not.

being a porter sucks jsut to let you know it get old really fast and you will hate it.

there are a lot of different jobs within a dealership sales, service, warranty, tech, business office, etc...

but it is nice to get the experience

the service depts of dealerships can vary tremendously. you can walk down a "dealership row" in your town and as long as they are not the same dealergroup name their way of going about business is completely different...meaning if they outsource work like the guys above said or have everything internal.

the dealer i work for does everything here. detail/lot guys are all the same. sales deals with moving cars as far as lot organization goes.

detail is always fun because pretty much every car coming in goes through it so you can clean up a 98 chevy prizm or a 2007 new $50k vehicle

....but it's labor intensive for sure

To be honest I would rather do something Labor intensive rather than sales (right now)

Thanks, That Is the situation I was hoping to hear about. I figure I spend Hours washing everyone's car anyway's I might as well get paid for it. I just wanted to know if Simply applying was all that was involved.

Thank You everyone, I will have to start applying soon.
