[QUOTE=vtec9,Nov 20 2007, 08:39 AM] The cruel and unspeakable things we do to other humans make you wonder how civilized we really are.

Red meat is bad for you. I limit my intake of red meat but only for health reasons.

Animals eat other animals. We are animals. We eat other animals. Liking animals has nothing to do with it unless you like a particular animal then eat it out of pleasure and not hunger. Then you are just a jerk.

In the bible it is stated that animals were put on earth for man. I'm not saying that you need to be religious to believe that, just that if God says it's ok you are probably feeling guilty due to liberal bull $hit and not a logical reason.

That being said, HOW we treat the animals that are alive, HOW we kill them, and WHEN we kill them is a totally different subject.

Most vegetarians don't necessarily think eating animals is terrible, it's that, especially concerning birds, the animals live in the most disgusting and horrendous conditions imaginable and are killed inhumanely. I think if I have a herd of cows and I provide them safety from predators, minerals to keep them healthy, grass/hay to keep them well fed, medicine if they get sick or have child birth problems, there is nothing wrong with eating an older one every once in a while. If I was a cow, I'd take that deal in a heart beat. You are going to die anyways. You more or less don't have to worry about $hit until you do and your chance of living to an older age is probably better than if you were just out in the wild.

On the flip side, if there are 9,000 turkeys who are crammed in a pos shed and their entire lives consist of the same 2 sq feet, something is not right.

How do I deal with it? I try to eat humanely raised foods and meat that hasn't been saturated with hormones etc.

One of my pet peeves is when people condone the hunting of animals that are used for food [deer hunting for example]. Then they go to Mcdonald's and eat a big mac and tell me I am the bad guy.

I think there is something wrong with people who don't even give the animal the respect to admit it was indeed an animal and it died so you could consume a big mac. I think everyone should be required to kill an animal, gut it, skin it, and cook it. THEN they can eat all the meat they want. It's pathetic that so many people are unwilling or too guilty to realize every bit of meat they eat is due to an animal giving its life, willing or unwilling, so you can have a breakfast burrito that day.

It's more dependent on where they're farmed.

A friend in school lived on a hog farm. They treated those animals well and with respect. They took care of them when they were sick and looked out for them. But they were realistic and very in tune with "the cycle of life."

Literally, if the hogs didn't die, it would have been his family suffering.

They were never cruel about it, though.

And I think it's crueler what big business does to teenage girls and boys in China... working 60 hours a week in mind-numbing factory jobs for less than minimum wage.

I just saw a documentary on the Osram light bulb factory in China.

That to me is sadder than killing some cattle.

My meat comes in plastic-wrapped packages. There was never an animal involved. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Here is what I tell all vegetarians, and all those who are thinking about not eating meat.

In the united states, meat, is a business. Cows/Chickens/Whatever cost money to raise, which in turn will turn a profit when butchered and sold. Now, if the meat is not being sold, the farmers are losing money by the day. What do you think they are going to do? Keep at it? No way, they will find another way to make money, which involves killing the animal regardless. Moreover, eating meat, is at least for living purposes. Having leather seats in your s2k is a luxury. You should feel a lot worse about the seats, than you should about a good prime rib.
