My family had good friends who had dated for like.. 8? years. They finally decided to get married, and then no more than 6 months later, they broke up.

Hypothetical Question: Let's say I have $100k and I want to get married soon. What is the best way to keep that money, so if a divorce comes then it won't be a marriage asset? IRA, Buy a house, Swiss bank account?
Note: I live in NJ. I don't have gf or plan to get married anytime soon. I also don't have $100k.

The IRS doesn't care which mattress you put it under. . . it's always been a crime to not REPORT the income.
If it falls off the back of the truck, that's a whole 'nuther issue.

Also in a divorce I thought assets that you had previous to a marriage were yours to keep. Only earnings and acquisitions after the marriage are vunerable?
I'd suggest
1. talking to a divorce attorney
2. buying 100k worth of gold and putting it in a safe deposit box.

That's $100K in the bank RIGHT NOW. . . accruing interest. . .
If it was just a case of $100K, you'd almost have half a leg to stand on. . . but think about this: sight unseen, she's entitled to half (or more, depending on the state) of EVERYTHING. . .
I had to explain this to my ex-fiancee as we were getting serious -
IRA
Savings on hand (she had saved nothing)
401K (she had saved nothing)
Stock Grant from my employer
Employee Stock Purchase program
Condo Equity (and I live in an expensive part of the world)
She divorces me within a year or two. . . her half would come out to ~$250K (would have been more when we were dating). Not bad for a year's work.
Get a pre-nup.
