My husband dropped out of college after about 3 years as a business major. Started his own company as an electrical contractor. In 1981, he made about $27,000. Now he makes in the higher 6 figures and has 30 some employees. He does work his butt off though.

I don't think anyone would argue that you need to go to college to make money. That said I think college is a great experiance and would never dream of giving it up for any amount of money.

After college, folks who want to be physicians will have a HUGE negative income!!!!! Most will have $100-150K or more of debt after medical school graduation; that doesn't even include undergraduate debt. Then they would work as intern/resident at the equivalent of minimum wage or less for 3 or more years to become board certified for a particular field of medicine(Urology, General Surgery, Family Medicine, OB/GYN, ect.) Finally after all the years of training, they can start to make more money to pay back the huge debt and skyrocketing mal-practice insurance premium ($15K-75K/yr depending on specialty.)

With a BS in C Sc from a CSU I got $36k in 1995 (pre-bubble, Sacramento area [~20% less than the bay]) at HP. While I got 15% raises each year (which seemed like a lot), two years later new hires were getting $50k to start (which meant I was making less than they were!).

No idea what new hires are getting these days, since we haven't seen any in years. :-)
