I am buying a shotgun

I was actually discussing a similar idea with a friend of mine. He is, in his own words, "armed to the teeth" in preparation for a home invasion or worse. Anyway, we were talking about what the best weapon would be for home defense. I thought, "tactical shotgun" would be best, but he brought up a good point - the spray would really f' up my apartment. <-- probably the last thing on my mind, but an interesting point.
Anyway, he has a Glock 32 and a S&W .357 Magnum revolver. I guess either would work well enough to ward off an attacker. Opinions?
I don't own a gun, but I'd like to hear what you guys think. My baseball bat probably wouldn't get too far in NOLA right now.

My hunting mentor has taken deer with :

I suck, compared to his skills.

Happs, what Daniel said, that .357 Magnum may easily kill a neighbor if you miss. Most shotgun pellet loads will not go through two house walls. That makes it superior in strictly home defense.
That, and the sound of racking a shell into the chamber could scare off an intruder! I've heard 0000 buckshot described as a cloud of nine 9 mm projectiles (though only simple balls).
454 Casull? That's insane for a handgun round. Should call it a hand cannon. A non-compound bow is a hard way to hunt too (I'm ignoring the knife, too crazy!).

Hand stings a bit with either after a few rounds.
In some ways it's easier to aim in some ways it's a bltch.
