Now if things go bad (very superstitious) my mom will buy a turtle and we would write our names or something like that with a prayer and set it free. Helped out a lot when I got charged with a whole lot of stuff when I was younger.

Most turtles like canned cat food - you can also throw in some berries for variety - mine also like chicken; in fact they love chicken. Here is a thread on my turtles -- all found:

you need to positively identify the species before anyone can give you any good advice on its care.
there is a vast wealth of information on herp care on the internet though.
in a pinch i'd start with some wet cat food. many turtles enjoy eating goldfish as well. a big dish with a couple inches of water and a few rocks to make it easy for the turtle to get up out of the water. get some feeder goldfish and put them in. you have to be patient but its cool to watch them eat. you'll wonder how they dont starve to death.
careful with this though.... the trouble is that many animals especially wild caught ones are accustomed to a diet based on waht is available. once they develop those patterns its often very difficult to get them to switch diets. in many cases wild caught animals starve to death rather than accepting the diet that is offered.
watch your hygeine with turtles. they are a very common source of human salmonella infections.
i've kept a myriad of herps in my life and even caught and raised a number of wild creatures. that said, based on experience, put it back where you found it. let it do its thing. if you want a turtle, go buy one at the pet store. you'll have a much greater chance of success.
