I got an interview!
Lots of good info in here on how to prepare for the interview.
I'm actually currently doing an internship with an airline. And yes it's unpaid. They also don't help provide housing, and i moved from Florida up here to Chicago for this internship. Yes it sucks...
I started about 2 weeks ago and i've done a whole lot of paperwork and a whole lot of nothing. Seriously. But... i'm a pilot so there's not a whole lot that i can do or that they can train me in. So i understand. Although i will get to fly the sim and attend a few classes. But that'll be it. My boss is very laid back and doesn't care if i take a few days off to go fly somewhere or if i want to take a couple hours lunch and go roam around the airport.
But you do an internship not for the pay. You should feel privilaged that they even hire you, as internships are very competitive. You do an internship for the experience and the hopes to get hired by that company shortly after you graduate from college.
For me i was very much on the fence as to whether i wanted to go to the airlines or the airforce after i graduated. So this internship is letting me know how the airline industry works and i'll be able to make my decision a lot easier. Also getting a job as an airline pilot is VERY competitive and with the internship i'll pretty much be guaranteed a job offer once i meet the minimum requirements.
So all in all i don't care that it's unpaid and i don't care that i'm usually sitting around doing nothing. I'm just happy to be here and i can not wait to be able to fly for them! So i am willing to put up with this for the next 3 months with no complaints.

Another highly competitive company for employees is Lincoln Electric. The assembly line workers are paid by piece work, plus they get performance bonuses each year (up to 100%!!!), plus they don't lay off their workers. They are still privately owned as well.
Great company - I spent a week there for a training seminar and was amazed at how happy, knowledgeable, and competent the employees were. Even the trainees were exemplary.
If it wasn't in Cleveland, I'd have applied long ago.
That said, my company also doesn't lay off salaried employees, so I get roughly the same benefits, just not the big performance bonus that's possible at Lincoln Electric.
