Default I got into an accident

This happened 10 mins after the night of Friday the 13th. I was driving down this road and everybody was looking to the right to watch a car getting towed. Oddly everybody moved to the 1st lane on a 3 lane road. I was behind a Chevy Nova (cleanly modified) and I happened to look to my right going at about 35, the Chevy Nova was going a tad bit faster then I was. When I look forward the Nova was about 5 feet ahead. He had slowed to about 25 with no cars in front of him. I know this is my fault, and his rear end ended up on my hood. This is my 1st major accident and was wondering what considers a car "totalled or salvaged". I have pretty bad front end damage, mechanically, everything up to the intake manifold is crushed (the 1.8T engine has it's intake manifold placed like an RSX).

Sorry about the accident.

Different insurance companies have different policies regarding totalling cars. Normally if the cost of repairs are over 70-80% the value of the car before the accident, they would declare it a total loss. The only exception is when they consider that there is some safety issue and the fixed car will not be safe to drive - they don't like liabilities.

When I had an accident last year, the initial estimate was $16,000, they did not total the car. However, by the time the car got fixed it cost them $24,000. Apparently the Appraiser screwed up big time.

I would suggest you get a private appraisal from an independent party on top of the insurance co's appraisal. If you want the car totalled, the private appraiser might be able to spend some more time looking for potential damages and hence raising the cost to fix which in turn would make the car a better candidate for a total loss.

I just wish I had known all this cause it's been a year since I had the accident and the car's still not right - paint problems.

Good luck!

Ouch, that sucks.

Yesterday I was driving in our Civic si and was stopped at a light. I had left the car in 3rd and didn't realize it, so when I went to take off, the car stalled. I started up the engine and tried to take off again (still in third). I caught it and go to put it into first and BAM some impatient broad in her beater corolla has inched forward into my bumper. There's now like 3 or 4 scratches and 2 indentations in the bumper
