No I did not, the download was on the SCHOOLS web site, and it was "free software" they never said it was wrong or that something bad could happen then they started dishing out litigation letters. Extorsion!

First, even though you have no money, you need to contact a lawyer. This sounds like a lot of bullshit. If your credit is fed, what are they going to do if you don't pay? Put you in jail? Ignorance is never bliss, but this doesn't sound you are at fault (if what you say is EXACTLY how it all went down), and you'll need an attorney's help.

You certainly do not go to Iraq just because your fines MIGHT be a certain amount.
