At present you have no choice for the "all you can eat" model. Ipods are not supported on any of those services. You'll need a MS "Playsforsure" MP3 player like the Creative MicroZen or Dell MP3.

Theres a Napster/Kazaa knock-off called Lime-Wire...I'm pretty sure its illegal considering it is a peer2peer sharing network (which means downloading is free)..it shows you ratings of the quality of the song and is pretty quick. All you do is drag over the songs from the folder it downloads into onto the iTunes playlist and should just click right over.

You don't need an ipod compatible program to download mp3s... the ipod reads any normal mp3 file. I'm not sure how the ipod sets up on a PC though -- if you have to still use iTunes to import and delete songs from the ipod.

The only problem with importing MP3's into iTunes is that file management is a pain. Its not nearly as easy as buying from iTunes.

And besides, at $0.99 a song, whose gonna go broke buying music? Pace yourself, be legal, and enjoy it.

For the Napster type service where you can download all the MP3s you want for 14.99, you need an MS Playsforsure device. Ipods will not work. Yes, you can transfer an MP3 to an IPOD but you cannot use the "all you can eat" services available.

And MyBad, if you consider that the smallest Ipod holds what, 3000 songs? Then yes it will cost a small fortune to fill up your player if you don't already have a decent music library.

1. Buy a quality portable mp3 player like an IRiver.
2. Buy a subscription to a news server with good coverage and retention like Altopia or some othe provider. Around $10 - $15 per month http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/...providers.html
3. Install Forte Agent or some other quality newsreader
4. Download and sample mp3s from the mp3 newsgroups on Usenet (alt.binaries.sounds.mp3. ... ) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

Download all the music you want risk free. It's not peer-to-peer, and not traceable. When you find music you like, order the CD from Amazon.com so you'll have a physical backup. Paying for downloads is crazy.
