Default I-Pod Touch

So... my GF bought me an I-Pod Touch and the thing is great. It has all these features (internet, email, weather, google maps, etc) that center around needing to have some sort of internet access. It is WIFI equiped, so when I'm home, I can log onto the web with no problem at all, but when I leave my house, I can't access the internet. It picks up WIFI hotspots from other people's houses, but obviously they have locks on them, so I can access the internet.

My question is (for who has one)... is there a way to purchase an internet access plan (same as which the I-Phone has) so that I can access the internet anywhere?

I've read a few things about it and some say yes you can and others say you can't... so I have no idea. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I just don't see the point of having all these features that center around the internet, but you can't use it outside of your house?!?!? This would be a cool little gadget especially for work so that I can check emails whenever I'm not in the office.

It's only wifi, doesn't have a 3g chip, so you can't purchase an internet plan for it.

Barnes & Noble, McDonalds and Starbucks all offer wi-fi through AT&T (small fee required.) Panera has free wi-fi. Many other retailers offer wi-fi. You can actually download a wi-fi finder app (or is it just a website?) that's basically a list of hotspots.

there are programs(apps) to find where wi-fi access is available... other then that you don't really have many options.

Oh ok... I see. Thanks guys.

I wonder if the next generation Touch will have such a capability since it is extremely limited as is right now.

I've read that you can actually crack the itouch and make it an Iphone. Have to search the web as to how though.

Too much money and for the crappy service you get from ATT, not worth it.

I'd much rather spend my money on a Blackberry or something. But since the Touch was a gift, I'm not complaining one bit. I'll just have to deal with going to hotspots... lol.

I've seen that somewhere too but I wouldn't be the one to actually try it out. If there was someone that would do it I would (since they'd get me a new one if they screwed up), but I wouldn't to try it out myself.
