What front fork is he using? I never knew there was a 5-incher that could accommodate 3-inch tires.
I ride a Jekyll 1000 - gotta love the Lefty!

I've got a friend running the Marzocchi Monster T and that things big enough to run under a motorcycle...

The Lefty, huh? I"m constantly amazed at that fork. That titanium lower is so freakin' strong. Ever seen a broken one? My friend (the one with the Monster T) used to run a Lefty until he finally bent it up near the head tube clamps...on something like a 15 foot drop...
My buddy owns a bike shop and was actually testing it for the local Cannondale rep...
Yeah, the Lefty...
I'm looking to upgrade to a Lefty DLR titanium, but it's a lot of money and mine is good for now...
The only real advantage of a Lefty that I can think of is that mud can't accumulate in the fork. I'm running discs (no V-brakes - don't fit anyway) so it's even less of a problem. But on my old GT Karakoram (which was the perfect bike for climbing, btw)... That 10lbs of mud was a biatch!
I've never seen a broken Lefty. I ride the shiet out of my bike and have yet to damage the fork, though I would imagine it's easier to damage a Lefty than a full fork. Your friend must've been doing some wicked drops because I've once hit a 9-inch curb (I didn't see it) dead-on at about 20mph and not damage a thing. I didn't pac-man the rim or even pinch-flat; a testament to the durability and performance of the fork. Thank God I didn't have the front fork locked out when I hit that curb!
As for the Marzocchi Monster T... That reminds me of the 'first' freeride bike - that one with the 19" Dunlop motorcycle tires. Heh, I got a boner just thinkin' about it.
