I just talked to a friend of mine on the rescue teams, he said the looting is so bad they had people actually trying on shoes to make sure they stole the right size.
Most of these people don't have any other clothes... they have been wearing the same things for the last 5 days and have had to walk through contaminated water. Perhaps they are just looking for a fresh pair of clothes and shoes.... and that is why they are trying them on.
stop bitching at each other and HELP ANY WAY YOU CAN!!
would i loot to feed myself / my loved ones and to survive- **** YES
who cares if they called for an evacuations - PEOPLE are still there and they NEED our help

It's a sad sad day for Americans!! But what do you expect for a Nation that embraces guns and burn the most fossil fuel throughout the planet. Plain stupidity of a media plagued society that believes in it's government. I feel terrible for the people but these bad disasters are only getting bigger and better for the media as we feel the need to drive our SUV's, and are greedier than we've ever been. I say it's time to wake up people!! GLOBAL WARMING IS HAPPENING!! Mr. Bush seems more worried about oil stockpiles than the people he's supposed to be serving as a President!Loathing is OK when it's for survival!! If I was there I'd be getting all the smokes and Jack Daniel's just trying to drown my sorrows!! Let's Pray for the people!!

Everyone said it was going to be that bad, actually worse than it was.
Everyone assumed that the storm was going to flood NO but it wasn't that bad then the water broke through.
You're supposed to evacuate BEFORE
What is it about before you know during the 1st evacuation order that you don't understand. What is it about walking that you don't understand? One foot in front of the other and eventually you'll get there if it takes you all day who cares, you live.
I'm not saying anyone is supposed to walk or swim there now. They can't they are stuck where they are for the most part because they didn't do it BEFORE the hurricane.
It doesn't matter if the whole dome was filled sholder to sholder it could've held them during the storm and they would now have food and water instead they have some roof shingles to munch on.
What if you have a 2 or 3 year old? You mean that wouldn't motivate you to make sure you got to a safe place more? Your spouse doesn't have feet? Literally well then they had transportation for the disabled.
What is the further distance within the city limits of NO? If you can't walk that in a day you need help.
Old people and the mentally handicaped have an excuse others do not.

The evacuation was called friday afternoon. The transit buses ran constantly 24 hours a day until sunday night. Louisiana transit vans and ems ran until sunday night. The third tier (and the most seats of the three teirs)of the superdome was never used. There were plenty of seats and there was plenty of transport. This comes from my new neighbor. He was in the superdome b/c he works for new orleans oep. His house is one that is flooded. New Orleans needs 450 buses to get all of these people to texas, a very long round trip. The 100ish metro buses didn't have to go to texas, they stayed around town (a much smaller round trip). He broke down yesterday crying... not b/c his house is destroyed but b/c no one had to die.
Sure some people thought they could weather the storm. It's hard to blame that on ignorance b/c everytime we get a hurricane down here we talk about the one that hits new orleans. Department of Homeland Disorder had studies showing that if a category 5 hurricane hit NO it would be one of the most deadly and devastating events that could happen in this country. In the top three from what I understand.
After the fact, there were people that didn't go to safety. There are people that are trapped for days. Someone really dropped the ball over here. Right now there is no time to place the blame, we need to get help. However I really don't understand that when President Bush declared a state of emergency saturday, two days before the hurricane, when we knew it was a category 5, and most of the computer simulations and doctors in the hurricane center said it was most probably going straight through NO, why was there no staging of military and personel. The only persons staged ready to respond were electric crews and local fire/police departments. Today, friday, five days after the storm hit, national guard members are just leaving from Morgan City. Morgan City if 1 hour away from NO. They weren't called by their commanders until wednesday afternoon. I really wish I could understand why it would take that long for the government to initiate relief efforts even in our local Louisiana marines. Why, if the Department of Homeland Security had studies showing this would be one of the worst catastrophies to hit the US border, is it taking so long to get them help? The probability of the storm hitting NO was very high and that probability was known since saturday. The levee system was built for a category 3 storm. The improvements planned for the levee system for the last 30 years never got done b/c of federal budget cuts. The government knew the danger for years, they knew the hurricane was very very likely to hit since saturday and nothing was done.
I realize I'm babbling but I haven't been able to sleep for days. I have family that lived there, I haven't gotten in touch with yet. They did evacuate but the telcom system is screwed right now. When I lay my head down I can't clear the pictures out of my head of the horrors my neighbor, which was right beside mayor nagin, has told me.

I stand corrected. I was under the impression that they didn't think they would fail in this storm only that it would overflow.
