[QUOTE=magician,Oct 22 2009, 05:07 PM] Getting back on track: I was advised by a poster on another forum that, inasmuch as I've never imbibed in Scotch, and inasmuch as Macallan is fairly strongly-flavord (as Scotches go), I should purchase a small bottle of, say, Dewars, and sip it a bit for at least three days before the Macallan tasting.

Dewar's White Label is complete swill. Their 12 yr is slightly more palatable, but still not that good. Maybe your friend suggested you drink a bit of that so that you'll appreciate the flavor of Macallan. If that's the case, give it a try...just don't let the experience turn you off to scotch altogether.

To paraphrase Robert Redford in Spy Games: Never drink a scotch less than 12 years old.
I agree. Please don't drink Dewar's and think it's a good representation of Scotch.

[QUOTE=Bobert,Oct 22 2009, 05:21 PM] Then I got a bottle of Dewars 12 yr, drank some on the rocks and rather enjoyed it. I'm sure it's nothing compared to most any single malts out there, but I'm just starting out, and I'm pretty broke...

Is it Friday yet?

An English friend of mine drinks a swill called "Scotch American:" cheap scotch mixed with ginger ale. Yeccchhhhh!
Oddly enough, Johnnie Walker Red in ginger ale is actually quite tasty. However, do not, under any circumstance, drink JW Red straight. I've been to a couple of JW tasting events, and even their official spokesman/sales rep said Red Label was best suited to mixing.

The Glenmorangie 25yr. single malt is far better, but each single malt has it's own character and taste relative to it's region of origin. Macallan is a good whiskey and I would suggest you request no ice (if possible) during the tasting in order to fully take in the subtle flavors. The tasting sounds fun, enjoy the time!

I've heard that adding a little water or an ice cube helps bring out the flavor more? I can only drink the really smooth stuff straight. I don't like neat harsh shit. I love JW blue label neat, but honestly it took me a while to tolerate it that way.

JW green IMO though is disgusting.
