Man vs Wild
If I'm going to have one person around when the sh*t hits the fan, I'd want Bear to be that guy. He's climbed Everest AND been in special forces. He also downclimbs 1000 foot rock faces with no gear.
For my money, that's one tough mofo.

I'm pretty sure if you dropped Les Stroud and Bear Grylls on Mars, they'd show up in South America in 11 days
Either that or Les would eat Bear while Bear explained to the camera that sometimes in survival situations you have to do whatever it takes to stay alive, then recount one instance in 1947 where a family of twelve ate their father and mother in order to survive 22 days trapped under a glacier

If you read the credits at the end of the show, Bear is NOT the survival expert.
Yes, he's the "face" behind the real experts and is quite an accomplished individual, but he's not the vast bastion of knowledge the show depicts him to be. The survival experts vary by region and it's a different expert(s) each episode.
It would be amazingly difficult to have such local knowledge of every type of environment that Bear "survives."
That being said, he's an incredibly gifted person in many respects and I admire his serving in the SAS, climbing Everest, etc.
One last thing, there was an episode, can't remember which one, where he stated he was jumping from the plane at 2500' and it was very dangerous...except when he climbed out on the strut, his altimeter clearly showed he was at at least 4500' - 5000'. Obviously 2500' is more exciting, but even he as an experienced skydiver wouldn't freefall for 10 seconds from 2500'...that would mean he's deploying at 1500' and hopefully under canopy at around 1000'. Anything around 5000' or less is known as a "Hop 'n Pop."

i think bear is better than les anyday. and as for survival expertise, i think he does his homework before getting dropped into each area he's supposed to survive in. i mean, it IS incredibly hard to know and remember everything about everywhere.
one reason why i think his show is somewhat staged is because the camera crew can get really good camera angles on what he's doing... stuff kinda like when he's floating down a river and the camera zooms out, you can safely assume that the camera man is on the bank riding a vehicle to be able to follow him down the river.
on the other hand, i think the show is also realistic because i remember that episode when bear gets stuck in the amazon and he tries to build a bamboo ladder to cross a river but the bamboo ladder he builds just totally breaks and he couldnt even start a fire because it started raining...
kinda like that... i dont know... i still think bear is cooler than les, he's way more entertaining and he has balls to attempt to do the stunts he does. plus, i think his accent is cool
