Off-topic TalkWhere overpaid, underworked S2000 owners waste the worst part of their days before the drive home. This forum is for general chit chat and discussions not covered by the other off-topic forums.
While driving around fast and getting your car sideways in a safe environment may be fun, watching either as a "sport" is a complete waste of time and calling it sport is an insult to those with athletic ability.
At one event you would find a bunch of inbred hicks drunk off their asses, at the other rice-boy-gangsta wannabes. One parking lot full of pickup trucks and one full of Civic's with giant wings. Either gives me a headache. But if you want me to chose a bigger waste of time, I would say Nascar because you will always find some dolt who is willing to tell you who has the most points, who is feuding with who, and the rule changes since last year. Those folks really need to do something constructive.

Useless?
Have you ever heard the term scrubbing off speed?
By the way, I'd be very surprised if anyone posting on this thread has a clue what drifting really is.
no i guess not. i wish someone would explain this dynamic and captivating subject to me. im sure that it will go right over my head and that only a genius like yourself will truly be able to grasp drifting in all of its complexities.
come the fuc k on.
first of all, no one asked if we like to drift. we are discussing drifting and nascar as spectator sports.
nascar is at least racing, where is WATCHING drifiting is like watching a figure skating event.
if you are racing in such a way that drifting can improve your track time or something to that effec, then i'm all for it.but drifting as a spectator sport is ****ing lame. why would i give a shit about the style of someone drifitng. that is so lame and gay.
someone mentioned that they drift in rally racing, and thats great. they are racing. its not some stupid bullshit that involves cars but it is actually racing.
Competitive drifting vs NASCAR racing? For me it's easy. NASCAR is an objective measure of cars and men - the car that finishes first within a prescribed set of rules wins. Drifting is more like figure skating than it is like racing. You win based on style, which, despite requiring great skill, is more in the eyes of the judge than on anything measurable. Thus NASCAR is better, or less lame, than drift.
A friend of mine likes to drift. I rode with him during an event and had a great time. It's fun sliding around the track all day. I don't think it's a good spectator sport though. Not that NASCAR is all that thrilling to watch. If I had to choose to do one though, I'd probably pick drifiting. I like to go fast and turn left and all, but I'd rather just screw around in a parking lot for a few hours than hit cruise and go in circles. I don't care for the majority crowd for either event.
Funny story though, at the drift event I was at, there was some backwoods guy from tennessee drifting an 1980's model Crown Victoria LTD. Bench seat and all! Funniest thing I had ever seen:
Pic of me and my friend:
That's probably the most fun as a passenger that I've had in a while. Of course, the event wasn't judged. It was just guys out having fun.

You're clueless.
1. The original post contained nothing with regards to viewing, or participating.
2. Racing may be the ultimate expression of style & personality for you, but then you'd have a pretty sad personality since the ultimate racing machine would be a computer, and one day will be.
Since you're fond of the terms "lame" and "gay", I think it's pretty lame and gay that people like you get to breathe my air.
The USA is really behind the curve on what Drifting really is.
So far most of you are assuming that Drifting isn't a competition and it's just ballet for cars. Until you actually see a drifting "COMPETITION" than I can see why some of you don't see the value in the sport.
I went to the GT Live event at Fontana Speedway and caught a Japanese vs. USA drifting competition and it was some of the best stuff I have ever seen! Now I understand how much skill this stuff really requires, and I must say, the USA "pro" drifters cannot hold a candle compared to the Japanese drifters.
Remember, the Drifting Competitions send two cars down the straightaway at speeds over 100mph and they are trying to get the other to mess up. If that doesn't get your pants in a bunch then you are more of an adrenaline junkie than me.
