I work in this business, and the typical profit margin is about 350%. That is the formula most restaurants go by when it comes to pricing wine. Liquor is about 1100%, depending on the product, and place.

Pinot is not planted much in Washington. Oregon is considered to be much better pinot country.

That being said, Washington has such a varied climate that people keep experimenting with new vinyards and discoving new places to grow different varieties.

They may have been from Oregon. I got them when I drove to Seatle from Norcal a few years ago. The various winery stops become a blur.

Are there any Zinfindel plantings in WA? I always considred Zins a hot weather grape, but they are planting Zins in cooler areas of CA.

Yes, but it's still much more associated with CA. Some vinyards in WA are located in very hot places. Keep in mind that almost all the grapes are grown in Eastern WA, which has a climate which is very different from the Seattle area.

There is some really interesting stuff happening with sangiovese and Rhone varietals in WA right now. In fact, a lot of WA vinyards and wineries are starting to get interested in branching out from what have been the mainstays -- Bordeaux varietals, chardonnay, and reisling.

Mmmmm. I love Zin. Mike, what are some good low priced Zinfindels (say under $30 or so).

I've also had some Malbecs from Argentina lately that were good. Anyone else tried these?

I would suggest Rosenblum which makes a good line of zin for the price you want. Here are a few others. Sequum, JC Cellars and Saviez.

I really like Villa Mt. Eden "Old Vines" for the price (which is about $15 or so, IIRC).

But zin is more something I'll drink when I feel like a change than something I drink on a regular basis.

I couldnt justify spending more than 50 for a bottle unless it was a quality champagne, and even there I would be limited to 70-100.

some people just have rich tastes I guess.
