Have you tried using an ipod without itunes? I figured it would kind of suck but it must be possible... There are also alternative programs like anapod...

If you mean as an mp3 player, no, but I have used them for plain old hard drives.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only ipods capable of doing that are the new video ones that because of Apple's great concern for their customers, they crippled by removing the remote connector which most if not all current ipod microphones use. Even if he got a new iPod, he's still going to have to buy a custom ipod microphone at an inflated price to record.

I have multiple ipods and a mac, so I'm not anti-Apple. I just don't think the ipod is the best option to do recording with. Too proprietary and expensive, which seems to be the way Jobs like to run Apple.
