I don't know! It's too much CPU for me! Seriously, it's so fast, nothing I throw at it can faze it. I've got SETI@Home running in the background constantly. I can zoom in on a Mandelbrot set 15 million million times magnification. Ripping a CD to MP3 take about two minutes. Games are at tripple digit framerates. What else can I do? I don't have the artistic ability to do 3D rendering.

Already did that.

After a little FSB overclocking. Stock 1900+ comes in at 1.60GHz, so I'm equiv to an XP2000+.

Sondra specs. My machine kicks ass here. www.tomshardware.com got only 4279/2704 for the new 2.2GHz Pentium 4. Their XP2000+ was at 4557/2311, also.

3DMark2001 scores are a bit low, however. With some tweaking, I was able to get it up to 7300, but in such a state as I'd like to leave the machine in.

I'm seriously considering building an AMD 1900+ machine for photoediting and gaming.
Nice to hear they run so well.
I'm thinking, AMD 1900+, Soyo SY-K7D motherboard, 1 G DDR SDRAM, ATI Radeon 8500 video and an undetermined audio board. The CD burner will move from my other machine.
Then I can relocate the other box for the kids to play games without the need to constantly repair their hacks.

Didn't I just recently see that Alienware would be selling their machines through Best Buy?

I have a PNY GeForce3 Ti 500.

I haven't heard anything specifically about Best Buy, but I wouldn't be surprised. It seems to me that they are trying to branch out their computer lines. Their website has business systems and servers, for example. I don't know if they'll be able to compete in the consumer market with the ulta-low-margin Dell and Compaq, however.

I don't know much about the Soyo motherboards, I've been mostly concentrating on Gigabytes, which is what came in the Alienware rig, but it sounds like you have a foundation for a really nice machine. Throw in a Lian-Li black anodived aluminum case for stylin', a Thermalright SK-6 HSF to keep cool...

If I were to do it over? All from www.newegg.com:
  • Lian-Li PC-61+USB Aluminum Cases / Chassis, Color: Black $180.00
  • Gigabyte GA-7VTX-H VIA KT266A motherboard $110.00
  • ENERMAX EG365P-VE (FMA). 350W Power supply $63.00
  • AMD ATHLON XP 1900+ $236.00
  • 2x CRUCIAL MICRON 256MB 32x64 PC 2100 DDR $146.00
  • Teac 1.44MB Black Floppy Drive $17.00
  • Seagate Barracuda IV 60GB 7200RPM $116.00
  • PLEXTOR 161040A PLEXWRITER 16x10x40 CDRW $125.00
  • PIONEER INTERNAL ATAPI 16X DVD-ROM $70.00
  • Arctic Silver's Premium Silver Thermal Compound Thermal Paste $6.00
  • Thermalright SK-6, ALL COPPER, Heatsink with Delta 60X60X25 38CFM fan $33.00
  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL $148.00
  • VGA PNY Verto GeForce 3 / TI500 $330.00
  • Logitech''s THX certified Z560 4.1 surround sound system $140.00
  • Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Xgamer $84.00
  • Intel PRO/100 S Network Adapter $27.00

Total - $1,834.
Did I miss anything?

Not a bad start and I know a few people that have said great things about New Egg's prices but I definetly saw a few things in there that can be had for a bit less. Then again, it wouldn't have the convienience of one-stop-shopping and perhaps a lower overall shipping rate (by getting it all in one place).

BTW - very nice rig.

The best mobo is the Soyo Dragon + Mobo, it has integrated sound, integrated net card, raid, and DDR.
What's funny is the sound is exactly equivalent to a Sound Blaster Live X-gamer. My friend has it and it's super awesome in speeds cause of it's new Via A chipset. I'm on a MSI k7t266 pro raid, no sound, no net card, so nonetheless that's the best mobo for price too. 140ish or less easily. I'm going to get me ATI RAdeon 8500 tomorrow w00t!. Anyone want a ATI Radeon 64 DDR, PM me.
