I wonder why the company would have such a test in place before hiring someone? Could it possibly be that they do NOT wish to have people like your room-mate as an employee? 
If he doesn't get the job and can't pay his rent, you are screwed. If he can clear his system and pass (let's use the word "fool" here) the test (and NOT change his drug habit), then the company is screwed. Hmmmmm, who to choose? Who to choose?

Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry where warehouse employees need to have DEA background checks we did a lot of drug screens. THC is absorbed by the body fat and only gradually released. For the most part, unless it was very low THC content, it will show up in a peepee test for about a week.

If the screener reports a negative test, the hiring company is typically notified by the next business day.
If the screener reports a test that is not negative, the resultes are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer, typically the doctor in charge of the clinic. This may or may not take longer...depending on the size of the clinic and the schedule of the doctor.
