Default Need help with Win 98 ME Updates

Hey guys, for some reason when I visit Windows Update and try to download the updates, the computer just seems to stop functioning. I get a download progress/install progress window that shows nothing and when I "X" out of it, IE 6.0 shuts down and I get asked to file a problem report. I tried to re download IE5 but it won't because I have 6.0 installed. I don't want to delete IE6 before having to download IE5, I'll lose all my bookmarks right? I'm also having trouble with links in IE6. I'll click on a link and get a duplicate page of the site I'm already on. If I hit STOP and then refresh, the link shows up. WTF?
This was all working fine a week ago.

Russ, You might want to use "System Restore" to take your system back to a point in time, where it was working OK. Bear in mind that you will lose any upgrades/changes that you may have made in the interim.

Good luck,
Bob

Russ, if you're running WinMe, TRASH IT! IT'S SHIT! Win98SE is badass.

But ya, what boiler said: System Restore. You may want to backup your more important files, though.

That's interesting, I thought that it was just the opposite. Windows ME has been MUCH better than any version of Windows 98 for me. Must be something to do with hardware drivers?

Now if you want to see something really interesting, I have a copy of Dos 1.1. It still works, if you can find a floppy that can read the 5 1/4" disk. It all fits on a 160K disk.

NO NO, Win ME is the WORST since win95. IMO from best to worst WinXP(took a bit to get used to it), Win2000 (not to be confused w/ME), Win NT, Win98SE, Win95, win3.11. Honestly the most stable op system is DOS, and microsoft did not even write it! lol Good movie to see how Good ol'Bill got to where he is, Pirates of Silicone valley, if your a nerd you will love it. But yes IMO trash ME if you can, go XP if you computer take take it, if not go find a buddy w/98SE.
G-Luck

*edit Drivers are VERY important to have the most recent, I would think if there is a software upgrade for Windows, they are assuming your running the most recent drivers for all your hardware.

WinME is decent, except for the fact that it was poorly written, Microsoft themselves have admitted that it's crap and that there are no more updates coming for it... XP Pro or 98SE are the only two OS's I will use

Simply re-installing Internet explorer might fix the problem.
