Need suggestions on how to become a mechanic
But seriously folks...
Go to school is the right advice. But rather than a trade school I'd suggest you look into a progam at the local community college. These programs are often sponsored by dealerships and sometimes the dealerships will give you a job commitment prior to graduation. Depending on the need in your area, the dealership might also underwrite your education. Look into the details where you live.
Trade schools are OK too but I don't think they compete as well in the above areas. BTW, I'm a Motorcycle Mechanics Institute graduate.

I don't know how old you are or what your crcumstance are, but it might be worth looking into whether there are any dealerships that offer apprenticeships.....
This would give you on the job training, safe in the knowledge that you have a job as well....
It would mean starting at the bottom, but that is likely to be the case anyway......

I know for a fact that ford as well as a few other US carmakers have aprenticship programs. It's like the military though, you go to school for 4-8 weeks where they teach you the basics required to do simple sirvices and teach you the gist of a good chuck of the standard models produced in the last 20 years or so. then you work for the next two years a dealership where you go off every month or so to specialized classes and after 2 years you are a decent one make mechani. Of course all of these skills can be transfered to another make of cars but if you stick around for another year or two you can start your way up to becoming a master mechanic and then shop forman and from there who knows.
My apprenticeship lasted 4 years.
I had to to a full time job and attend college for 15 hours per week. It was hard work and the financial results are not too good when you consider other career options.
Good luck though, it can be a rewarding career.
