Default Networking card is not working

Here goes the story. I just built a new computer with an Asus motherboard. I've always used Abit and had no problem until this one. Anyways, everything loads up ok except when I tried to access the internet and it keeps saying page not found, server error. I had built 2 computers before and they were pretty much plug and play when I connected the ethernet cable to my cable modem module. However, this one did not seem to work the same. What the hell did I do or go wrong? I checked the status of the ethernet device under 'networking device' and it said 'device working properly'. I did notice that the signal is coming in or being sent to my computer but then my computer is not receiving these signals that are being sent to it. Ok, in case if you were wondering, all the lights are working on both the cable modem module and the ethernet slot in the back of my computer. So once again what did I do wrong or what can I do to make it work? One more thing I did check the IP/TCP and everything is set to auto detect setting. PLEASE HELP ME,,,,,

yes, I did. If I didn't then it wouldn't say 'device is working properly' Besides, it came with the motherboard and yes, I did install everything on the CD that came with the motherboard.

did you try a windows update?? usually the drivers on the CD are outdated or are not fully compatible with the operating system you are using. i rarely if ever use the drivers from the disks that come with the hardware i buy. i merely rely on winxp to find the right drivers and use windows update religiously to make sure all my drivers and other stuff are current and compatible.

another thing you can try is go to "control panel", "internet option", and under the "connection" tab, click on "setup" and use the wizard to set up an internet connection.

edit: i just realize that you cannot connect to the internet and so you cannot do a windows update, so scratch the first comment. you may want to try the second one though.

"start" >> "run" >> type "cmd" and hit enter >> type "ipconfig /all" >> then paste your results here. In the command window, swipe all the text and hit enter to copy it.

One thought - are you going directly from the cable modem to the computer? First - bad idea - Second, I know that my ISP needs to register the MAC address of the NIC before it will let a system connect. If this is the case, you may need to contact your cable provider. Better yet, get a firewall / router. Most of these have a "MAC Clone" feature where you can emulate the MAC address of a previously registered MAC address so you wont need to call the cable company.

How does your computer obtain an IP address? Through DHCP? From the computer, where does it go, to a router or direct to a cable/dsl modem?

Thank you for all the replies. My service provider is Comcast and the only thing that connected to my computer is the motorola cable modem that was provided to me when I signed up. Dave Z, I will try your method and let you know how it goes.

good news. AFter hours of messing around with my IPconfig and such. I called comcast technical support, which I should have done first and that would have save me a lot of time and trouble. What happened was I had my old computer connected to the modem and the reason that it didn't let me access the internet was it did not recognize the new computer. All I had to do was unplugged the computer and the modem for 10 seconds and then reconnect everything and, Voila, everything is ok now. Thanks everyone for your support.
