I read that one couldn't hear most of the opening ceremonies - the drums, for example - because of Bob Costas' non-stop drivel.

C'est vrai?
Bob Costas is the worst of the worst when it comes to annoying human beings.

As far as the comparisons go with the different profession sports, I think I much prefer the Olympics. Those participating actually give a shit about it and care so much about it, that's what makes it so endearing in my eyes. I read this morning that Kobe and Lebron are both kicking around the idea of taking giant contracts to go play in Europe once their respective contracts are up. Something about making the move for $50 million, hard to say that their playing the game with winning at the top level in mind.
Kobe grew up in Italy and speaks fluent Italian. I bet you didn't know that. Going to Europe post his athletic prime for big money he couldn't make here is called being smart. Factor in the exchange rate and its genius.

And there are some on this thread that call me ignorant....please.

ROFL!

Most of those track athletes are failed Football, Basketball, and Baseball athletes that couldn't get on a Football, Basketball or Baseball team in high school or college and used track as their fall into sport. No one aspires to be a hurdler. The US's best athletes are all in major professional sports (NFL, NBA, MLB.) Sure there are some that do both...but ask them where they'd rather be...the NFL or running in circles like they are the Car of Tomorrow in a circle like a human NASCAR.
wow.

u sir, are narrow minded to the EXTREEEME

There'll definitely be videos of opening ceremony. It was the best opening ceremony I've ever seen. I can't imagine how much work they've put into it. Definitely shows the spirit and unity.

I think the point is that folks in this and other countries don't necessarily aspire to become NFL, NBA, MLB ballplayers. People do grow up wanting to compete in Soccer, Track and Field, Swimming, Gymnastics, etc. To say that most athletes are failed to participate in the baseball/basketball/football arena is narrow minded of you. The fact is they excel at something more than another. We can take your thinking and say that all Latin Amercian baseball players are failed Soccer players, because Soccer is bigger in those countries. The real fact is that many kids in the US don't want to participate in those sports. In order for most of them to make it to the Olympic level they would've had to start training at very young ages. Look at some of the swimmers or gymnast in their teens. The Soccer team is only allowed 3 players above 23 years old. Tim Duncan was a swimmer first and he couldn't make the Olympics so he had to fall back to basketball.

Baseball/Basketball/Football also aren't all about athletic ability. You assume that because a person has a ton of athletic ability that they will end up playing baseball or basketball. Those sports require a great deal of coordination and talent and those traits are not mutually inclusive with athletic ability.

So to say that runners, swimmers, etc. at the olympic level are second rate athletes isn't only a narrow view but flat out false. There are a lot more world class athletes in this world than what we see in our American pro sports.
